چکیده

Information about the long-term trends of surface and tropospheric ozone is important for assessing the impact of ozone on human health, vegetation, and climate. Long-term measurements from East Asia, especially China’s eastern provinces, are urgently needed to evaluate potential changes of tropospheric ozone over this economically rapid developing region. In this paper, surface ozone data from the Linan Regional Background Station in eastern China are analyzed and results about the long-term trends of surface ozone at the station are presented. Surface ozone data were collected at Linan during 6 periods between August 1991 and July 2006. The seasonality and the long-term changes of surface ozone at the site are discussed, with focus on changes in the diurnal variations, the extreme values, and the ozone distribution. Some long-term trends of surface ozone, e.g. decrease in the average concentration, increase in the daily amplitude of the relative diurnal variations, increase in the monthly highest 5% of the ozone concentration, decrease in the monthly lowest 5% of the ozone concentration, increase in the frequencies at the high and low ends of the ozone distribution have been uncovered by the analysis. All the trends indicate that the variability of surface ozone has been enhanced. Possible causes for the observed trends are discussed. The most likely cause is believed to be the increase of NOx concentration. Correspondence to: X. Xu ([email protected])

Contributions of pollutants from North China Plain to surface ozone at the Shangdianzi GAW station

Regional ozone pollution has become one of the top environmental concerns in China, especially in those economically vibrant and densely populated regions, such as North China region including Beijing. To address this issue, surface ozone and ancillary data over the period 2004–2006 from the Shangdianzi Regional Background Station 5 in north China were analyzed. Due to the suitable location and...

Long-Term Trend Analysis of Climate and Hydrological Series using Removal of the Autocorrelation Statistical Methods in the Eastern Gorganrood Basin, Golestan Province

Given the importance of climate change issue, consideration of the climate and hydrological data trend has become very important. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different methods to remove the effect of autocorrelation in assessing the trend of parameters such as temperature, precipitation and discharge of the Eastern Gorganrood Basin, Golestan Province. For this purpose, in ...

Spatiotemporal trend of ambient air particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 and 10 μm and ozone in Tabriz city, Iran, during 2006–2017

Background and Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the long-term temporal trends and spatial variations of ambient PM10, PM2.5, O3, concentrations in Tabriz city during the years 2006-2017. Materials and Methods: Real-time hourly concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, O3 measured at nine air quality monitoring stations (AQMSs) were obtained from the Tabriz Department of Environment (TDo...

Influence of air mass downward transport on the variability of surface ozone at Xianggelila Regional Atmosphere Background Station, southwest China

In situ measurements of ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO) and meteorological parameters were made from December 2007 to November 2009 at the Xianggelila Regional Atmosphere Background Station (28.006 N, 99.726 E; 3580 m a.s.l.), southwest China. It was found that both O3 and CO peaked in spring while the minima of O3 and CO occurred in summer and winter, respectively. A normalized indicator (mar...

Sensitivity of US air quality to mid-latitude cyclone frequency and implications of 1980–2006 climate change

We show that the frequency of summertime midlatitude cyclones tracking across eastern North America at 40–50 N (the southern climatological storm track) is a strong predictor of stagnation and ozone pollution days in the eastern US. The NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis, going back to 1948, shows a significant long-term decline in the number of summertime mid-latitude cyclones in that track starting in 1980...
